Apple is asking its OLED suppliers to use fewer bezels

Apple has reportedly asked its OLED suppliers Samsung Display and LG Display to develop frameless OLED panels. The decision is two-pronged: First, Apple wants to shrink the bezels on this year's iPhone 15 Pro models, then, maybe a few years later, Apple wants to switch to full-screen. As a result, there are no cut-outs for the camera and the frame is as thin as possible.

This possible word is the key. There are currently several critical roadblocks to Apple's bezel-less plans. One of them is the Under Panel Camera (UPC): currently the outer film layer is not as thin as it should be to accommodate the camera under the screen. Then there is thin film encapsulation (TFE), which protects the OLED from moisture and oxygen. It is made by overlapping an inorganic film and an organic film: the inorganic film blocks moisture and oxygen while the organic film blocks gaps in the inorganic film.

The third problem is that Apple strives to keep the iPhone screen flat, making it difficult for the edge of the screen to flex into the bottom bezel of the screen. Apple doesn't want a curved screen because it increases the bezels and because it believes curved screens break more easily.

These are all challenges facing Apple's display suppliers, meaning a truly bezel-less iPhone is still a long way off.
