Google is in talks to bring artificial intelligence to the news industry

Google is exploring the use of AI tools to write news articles and is in talks with news organizations to use those tools to assist reporters, a spokesman said Thursday.

A company spokesman did not name the news organizations, but the New York Times reported that Google is in talks with the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal's News Corporation and even the New York Times, among others. A spokesman for the American tech giant explained that these artificial intelligence tools could help journalists select different headlines or writing styles in a way that "improves their work and their productivity," adding that this is "the initial phase of idea generation."

"These tools are simply not designed for and cannot replace the essential role journalists play in reporting, preparing and editing their stories," the spokesman said.

The New York Times said some executives who saw Google's offer called it troubling, adding that the executives asked not to be named. The New York Times said the AI tool it is rolling out is called Inside Google (Genesis), citing people familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for (News) declined to comment on the New York Times report or the AI tool, but said, "We have a great relationship with Google and appreciate [Google CEO Sundar Pichai] for his long-term commitment to journalism." The news comes days after the Associated Press announced it was working with OpenAI, creators of popular chatbot ChatGPT, to explore the use of generative AI in messaging, setting a precedent for similar cross-industry partnerships could create.

It should be noted that some news organizations are already using generative AI to create their content, but the organizations have been slow to adopt this technology due to concerns about its tendency to generate disinformation and difficulties in distinguishing between human and software content.
